In the past six years, under the stewardship of Mayor Jerry Treñas, Iloilo City has reached remarkable milestones. The local chief executive has championed initiatives fostering economic growth, cultural vitality, and environmental sustainability. These efforts have not only boosted the city’s reputation but also significantly improved the quality of life for its residents.
Iloilo City, renowned for its vibrancy and competitiveness, has earned numerous accolades, including being designated as the Creative City of Gastronomy by UNESCO. This honor highlights the city’s rich culinary heritage and its dedication to cultural preservation. The city’s innovative I-Bike Program, which fosters a bike-friendly environment, won the esteemed 2022 Galing Pook Award, showcasing its commitment to sustainable urban mobility and active citizen participation.
“Iloilo City is more than just a place; it’s a community where innovation meets tradition,” Mayor Treñas explained.
He added, “Our achievements reflect our shared vision of building a city that thrives on creativity, inclusivity, and sustainability.”
The city’s commitment to creating a business-friendly atmosphere has been acknowledged with the 2023 Most Business-Friendly Local Government Unit (LGU) award from the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI). This recognition underscores the city’s efforts to support local businesses and attract investments, thereby boosting economic growth and vitality.
Central to Mayor Treñas’ vision for Iloilo City’s future is robust infrastructure development. A key example is the forthcoming revitalization of the Central and Terminal Markets through a public-private partnership with SM Prime Holdings. With an investment ranging from P1.5 billion to P2.5 billion, this project seeks to modernize market facilities, creating an ideal environment for local entrepreneurs to flourish and display their products.
“We envision our markets not just as economic hubs but as community centers that promote local culture and entrepreneurship,” Mayor Treñas emphasized.
He further stressed, “By revitalizing these spaces, we create opportunities for our vendors to grow their businesses sustainably.”
