180K passengers expected daily at NAIA on Holy Week break
Reggie Vizmanos March 12, 2024 at 07:19 PMUp to 180k passengers daily are expected to flock to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) during the upcoming Holy Week break this year.
This was shared by Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) Acting General Manager Eric Jose Ines as he estimated that the lenten season would add about 50,000 passengers to the current 130,000 daily average travelers at the airport.
He noted that this would be higher compared to the same period last year with 20,000 additional passengers.
Ines said, “We’re expecting more passengers, especially in the domestic destinations. It’s more convenient to travel these days, even to nearby cities in the region. So we are expecting higher than 20,000.”
He mentioned that as part of preparation for the Holy Week, the MIAA is looking at collaborating with police departments and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority to help them manage the expected traffic build-up near the airport.
They have already strengthened the sanitation measures and deployed more pest controllers, Ines disclosed.
“We request our passengers to throw their wastes in proper areas or trash bins to maintain cleanliness. Further, we request the public to refrain from sleeping on the chairs in the arrival area, especially those who are not waiting for a passenger,” he appealed.
The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), for its part, revealed that it is expecting an average of 7 to 10 percent increase in passenger influx across the 44 commercial airports that it operates.
CAAP spokesperson Eric Apolonio said, “Historically, CAAP airports logged an average of 7 to 10 percent increase in passenger volume during Holy Week.”
The CAAP-managed airports had 231,479 passengers during the lenten season break in 2021, and 1,715,720 in 2022.
