Three thousand kilograms of fresh mangoes, the Philippine national fruit, are set for shipment this month to Sydney and Perth, Australia, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) announced.

This follows the initial shipment of 1,500 kilograms of the popular Carabao mangoes sourced from Zambales to the same destinations in early September last year.

DTI Secretary Alfredo Pascual emphasized that this development further highlights the enhanced trade relations between the Philippines and Australia.

He noted that in 2023 alone, the trade volume between the two countries surged to USD4.1 billion, representing a 20 percent increase from the previous year’s USD3.4 billion.

“The continued growth in our bilateral trade underscores the vast potential for our products in the Australian market. The successful export of our mangoes exemplifies the significant strides we’re making in facilitating agricultural trade, which is pivotal for our economic agenda,” Pascual remarked.

The Carabao Mango, also called Philippine Mango, Manila Mango and “Manggang Kalabaw,” has become very popular globally owing to its sweetness, juiciness, texture, exotic taste and nutrition qualities.

This mango variety was listed in the 1995 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records as the sweetest mango in the world.

The Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Plant and Industry (BPI) has ensured that the Philippine mango shipments meet the protocols and requirements of the destination country including the Australia Biosecurity Act 2015.

FastboxPH, the logistics firm shipping the mangoes, has noted a surge in demand for this product within the Australian market, attributing it to the unparalleled taste and quality of Philippine mangoes.

It added that with Philippine mango exports to Australia adhering to stringent biosecurity regulations, documentation and inspection procedures, FastboxPH is poised to expand its presence across Australia.
