MANILA — The much-publicized “lifetime free fuel” incentive promised to Olympic champion Hidilyn Diaz has resurfaced online after her manager revealed that the reward has yet to be fully delivered.
Diaz made history during the 2020 Summer Olympics by winning the gold medal in the women’s 55-kg weightlifting event, ending the Philippines’ nearly century-long wait for its first Olympic gold.
Following her historic victory, several companies and organizations pledged cash prizes and incentives, including a lifetime supply of free gasoline from Philippine fuel company Phoenix Petroleum.
However, Diaz’s manager, Noel Ferrer, recently cast doubt on the status of the incentive after commenting on social media about the promise.
“Parang drawing naman po ang lifetime” Ferrer said, implying that the incentive has yet to materialize.
Ferrer also noted that they have not received recent communication from the company regarding how the lifetime fuel incentive would be implemented.
The issue resurfaced online as netizens discussed the reward in light of fluctuating fuel prices, with many recalling that Diaz was among the personalities promised lifetime gasoline following her Olympic triumph.
Aside from the fuel incentive, Diaz also received numerous rewards from both the government and private sector after her victory, including multi-million-peso cash incentives, residential properties, and other lifetime perks in recognition of the honor she brought to the country.
