CALAMBA, Laguna — A cadet from a maritime academy in Laguna passed away following disciplinary measures allegedly administered by his senior class officer due to a mistake committed by the victim in an online group chat.

The victim was identified as Vince Andrew Delos Reyes, a 19-year-old resident of Baco, Oriental Mindoro, and studying at a maritime academy in Barangay Canlubang, Calamba City, Laguna.

According to the Calamba police, the incident occurred on Monday but was only reported to the police early Tuesday morning.

Based on the investigation, Delos Reyes and four other cadets were resting in their barracks after dinner when they were summoned by their senior class officer due to an alleged offense. Delos Reyes accidentally reacted with a thumbs-up in their group chat.

As a consequence, the senior cadet instructed him to perform physical exercises. Over time, Delos Reyes began to struggle with breathing until he eventually collapsed.

He was promptly transported to the infirmary where he received initial medical assistance. However, his condition deteriorated further, marked by increasingly labored breathing and a weakening pulse, necessitating his transfer to the hospital.

He was declared dead on arrival by doctors at the Canlubang hospital.

The suspect has been apprehended and is currently held in custody at the Calamba police station. He is charged with reckless imprudence resulting in homicide.
