[EDITORIAL] Larry Gadon’s appointment, a questionable choice

When Larry Gadon’s profanity-laced video against veteran journalist Raisa Robles went viral in 2021, many were shocked at how a lawyer, who is supposed to adhere to the highest standards of ethical behavior, could commit such a shameful act. Gadon has gained notoriety for directing curses and insults at different people and groups, particularly critics of former President Rodrigo Duterte. He is also facing numerous cases, including cyber libel and violation of the Safe Spaces Act.

Many observers correctly predicted that justice would eventually hold him accountable for his actions. And it was only a matter of time before he would be made to answer for his misdeeds.

On June 28, 2023, the Supreme Court, in a unanimous decision, dealt a fatal blow to his career as a lawyer. Gadon was disbarred.

The Supreme Court, voting 15-0 on the disbarment case, found the video clip to be “indisputably scandalous that it discredits the legal profession.” The highest court of the country emphasized the unequivocal rejection of sexism or misogyny in the legal profession. The SC stated that six additional administrative cases have been filed against Gadon at the Office of the Bar Confidant, along with four cases at the Commission on Bar Discipline of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines. The substantial number of administrative complaints filed against Gadon undeniably reflects his character.

The SC’s unanimous decision also sends a clear message: lawyers must uphold the integrity of the legal profession at all times. Disbarment is a severe punishment reserved for major misconduct. It can have a detrimental impact on a lawyer’s career and reputation, as it entails being prohibited from further practicing law and results in the loss of their hard-earned work, license, and professional title.

However, Gadon has reasons to feel confident because two days before the Supreme Court’s decision was handed down, he was appointed as the Presidential Adviser for Poverty Alleviation. This raises concerns about political patronage and may be seen as a form of compensation for Gadon. It also sheds light on why he chose to resort to questionable behavior to retaliate against critics of his boss.

Gadon tried to downplay the significance of the Supreme Court decision by stating that he had retired from his law practice in 2015 and that his role as Presidential Adviser is not primarily focused on practicing law.

Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin defended Gadon’s appointment by asserting that his role will not be affected by his status as a lawyer. He also mentioned that President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. has confidence in Gadon’s capabilities to perform well in his job.

Malacañang seems to disregard his disbarment and the significant number of cases filed against him. His appointment is a waste of government funds, especially considering the existence of the National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC), which is responsible for advising the president on anti-poverty measures. The BBM administration is giving the impression, even at this early stage, that deplorable behavior are indeed accepted and tolerated within their government.
