MANILA — Former Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Babes Singson has announced his resignation from the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI), the body tasked with investigating alleged corruption in government infrastructure projects.
ICI Chair Andres Reyes confirmed the news at a press conference on Wednesday, stating that Singson’s resignation will take effect on 15 December, though it could be extended to 31 December.
“He mentioned the very intense, stressful ICI work has taken its toll on his aging body,” Reyes said.
Reyes added that Singson stepped down “for health reasons and security” and because he was “not used to this kind of life.”
Despite the resignation, Reyes reassured the public that the ICI’s work would continue. “The cases and evidence we file are proof of our work,” he said, adding that investigative activities would proceed as planned.
When asked about the impact of Singson’s departure, Reyes joked that the three De La Salle University alumni in the commission would now be reduced to two. On a possible replacement, he said he had no information. “We have not thought of that. We have been very busy. Anyway, it’s not my concern. That is the recommendation of the President, so I don’t know who it will be,” Reyes said.
Singson, an industrial engineer, served as DPWH Secretary under President Benigno S. Aquino III from 2010 to 2016. He was appointed to the ICI in September, shortly after the commission was created by executive order in response to allegations of corruption in government infrastructure projects, including the controversial flood control scam.
His resignation follows that of Baguio City Mayor Benjie Magalong, who stepped down from his role as special adviser to the ICI.
The ICI has drawn mixed reactions since its creation. Some see it as a step toward greater accountability, while critics argue it moves too slowly in tackling corruption.
