MANILA — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on August 12, recognized the crew of BRP Suluan for their bravery during a tense maritime encounter with Chinese vessels near Bajo de Masinloc (Scarborough Shoal) in the West Philippine Sea.
The incident occurred on August 10, when BRP Suluan was deployed to conduct a Maritime Patrol (MARPAT) and support the Kadiwa para sa Bagong Bayaning Mangingisda program, which aimed to deliver aid to Filipino fishermen. During the mission, Chinese vessels—including China Coast Guard (CCG) 3104 and People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) 164 —harassed Philippine ships using water cannons, dangerous maneuvers, and radio challenges.
In a dramatic turn, the two Chinese vessels collided while pursuing BRP Suluan, resulting in significant damage to the CCG ship. The PCG offered medical aid and towing assistance to the damaged vessel, showcasing professionalism despite the aggression.

At the awarding ceremony held at Pier 15, Port Area, Manila, PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan commended the 43-member crew for their courage and seamanship. He also praised the West Philippine Sea Group for their coordination and information operations during the patrol.
“You have proven that indeed we are the most durable point man in keeping the peace at sea,” Gavan said

“Bravo Zulu everyone. There are lots of things to do, but always keep in mind that what you’ve done, you should always remain calm, you should always remain professional yet unyielding in the face of whoever they are,” he added.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. reaffirmed the government’s stance, stating that Philippine vessels will never back down from asserting sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea.
