Sen. Risa Hontiveros at Atty. Chel Diokno, nakiisa sa mga nagpoprotesta laban sa pagmimina sa isla ng Sibuyan

Dinalaw nina Senador Risa Hontiveros at Atty. Chel Diokno ang mga residenteng nagpoprotesta at nagbarikada para tutulan ang pagmimina na sumisira sa yamang pangkalikasan ng Sibuyan island, sa lalawigan ng Romblon. Nais din ni Atty. Chel Diokno, Chairman ng Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG) at human rights at environmental lawyer na masuri ang sitwasyon at makiisa sa mga residenteng nakikipaglaban.

Nagtungo rin sila sa monumento ni Councilor Armin Marin na pinatay noong 2007 dahil sa paglaban sa pagmimina sa Sibuyan. Sa kanyang mensahe, binigyang diin ni Sen. Hontiveros na nakikiisa sila ni Atty. Chel Diokno sa laban kontra sa mapanirang pagmimina.

“…ang mga biktima ng karahasang ito ay mga environmental advocates, at mga lokal na residente at lider tulad ni Municipal Councilor Armin Marin na pinatay noong 2007 at mga residente na nagpoprotesta laban sa pagmimina, at kami po ni Atty. Chel ay lubos na nakikiisa [r]in at nakikiramay sa pamilyang Marin at nagpupugay sa kabayanihan ni Counci[lor]. Armin,” ani Senator Hontiveros.

Nagpahayag din ang senador ng kanyang saloobin sa naganap na karahasan sa mga residenteng dalawang lingo nang nagpoprotesta. Makikita sa mga lumabas na video ang pananakit ng ilang pulis sa mga tumututol sa pagmimina.

“Walang puwang ang anumang porma ng karahasan sa Sibuyan at sa anumang espasyo sa ating bayan,” ayon pa sa senador.

Matatandaan na inihain ni Senator Hontiveros ang Senate Resolution No. 459 para hikayatin ang senado na imbestigahan ang pagmimina ng nickel at iba pang metal sa isla ng Sibuyan, pati na ang mga nagaganap na pananakit at iba pang karahasan.

“Nilalayon ng resolusyong ito na matigil na ang karahasan at masiguro na mabibigyan ng kaukulang proteksyon ang kalikasan. Ang mga ganitong pagkilos tulad ng inyong barikada, tulad ng inyong laban na matanggal ang pagmimina [r]ito sa Sibuyan. Ito po ay nagsisilbing inspirasyon sa atin bilang galing din sa progresibong komunidad at nagbibigay ng lakas ng loob bilang isang mambabatas,” pahayag ng Senador.

Pansamantalang ipinatigil ng Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) ang operasyon ng Altai Philippines Mining Corporation (APMC) sa Sibuyan Islanddahil diumano sa mga paglabag sa environmental regulations katulad ng pagputol ng mga puno sa kanilang exploration site.

Sa isang pahayag, sinabi naman ng APMC na ititigil nila ang kanilang operasyon at nangakong magbibigay ng kooperasyon sa mga awtoridad para matugunan ang mga isyu laban sa kanila.

Ikinatuwa ng mga residente ang desisyong ito ng DENR pero binigyang diin nila na itutuloy pa rin nila ang barikada, “the fight is far from over,” anila. Ito rin ang reaksyon ni Senador Hontiveros.

“Hindi pa man lubos ang panalo, ito’y isang hakbang upang maipakita sa lahat ang paninindigan at pagkakaisa. Ang pagtitipon ninyo at sa lahat ng mga nagmamalasakit sa kalikasan at kagalingan ng mga mamamayan ng Sibuyan,” pahayag ni Sen. Hontiveros.

Tinaguriang “Galapagos ng Asya” ang isla ng Sibuyan dahil isa ito may pinakamakapal na forest cover sa buong mundo. Bukod sa iba’t ibang uri ng hayop at ibon, sa Sibuyan din nabubuhay ang mga natatanging species ng mga halaman. Kaya kapag tuluyan itong nasira, maaapektuhan hindi lamang ang ating bansa kundi pati na ang buong mundo.
