Alpha Phi Omega spreads joy and hope to a children’s shelter

Mike Manalaysay February 21, 2024 at 09:17 PM

Alpha Phi Omega (APO) recently hosted a heartwarming Gift-Giving event at Asociacion de Damas Filipinas in Paco, Manila on February 17. Generously sponsored by APO members in Ireland, notably the Abono family, and in collaboration with Alpha Epsilon Residente and the esteemed batch “8 and the Late 1,” the event brought joy to 65 children aged 3 to 12. Each child received a bag filled with essential school supplies and a delightful Jollibee food pack.

The event commenced at 3:00 pm with a prayer song led by the children, followed by a captivating greeting performance. The atmosphere was filled with songs and performances from the children, with Batch 8 and the Late 1 stealing the spotlight with a dance performance. The dance, taught by the children themselves, exuded joy, leaving everyone smiling throughout the activity.

The primary goal of the project was to provide moral support for the children at Asociacion de Damas de Filipinas, motivating them to pursue education as a means to overcome poverty. Beyond the tangible gifts, the event aimed to convey the message that the community cares for and loves them. The team could see the happiness they brought to the children reflected in their laughter and smiles.

Emotions ran high during the bag distribution, with some APO members and their families shedding tears, highlighting the profound impact of the event. Attendees also shared similar sentiments, realizing the significance of having a home and family. The joy was palpable as children proudly showcased their bags, feeling like winners and spreading smiles among the APO members.

The Gift-Giving event has been a regular tradition for APO AE chapter since the ’80s. APO, a non-profit service-oriented fraternity, is dedicated to providing service to schools and communities. The event serves as a training ground for new members to learn about conducting service activities, highlighting the ongoing commitment of APO to serve and make a positive impact in the community.

Asociacion de Damas de Filipinas, established in 1913, has been a haven for children and young mothers unable to provide for their offspring. Despite facing challenges, including a fire that affected the shelter, Damas continues its mission. Children at the shelter need support, particularly hygiene and sanitary materials, cleaning supplies, lights, electric fans, and additional assistance for food and nutritional needs.
