MANILA — Former Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan on Tuesday explained his attendance at a concert held in Malacañang Palace, emphasizing his support for the Philippine film industry and clarifying that his presence did not equate to compromising his long-held principles.
Pangilinan, who was seen in a widely circulated photo alongside President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and First Lady Liza Marcos, explained that he attended the “Konsyerto sa Palasyo: Para sa Pelikulang Pilipino” upon the invitation of Malacañang and to accompany his wife, veteran actress and singer Sharon Cuneta. Cuneta, widely regarded as one of the pillars of Philippine cinema, was a key guest at the event organized to highlight and support the local film industry.
“We thank Malacañang for supporting Philippine Cinema just as we support Malacañang’s decision to ban POGOs and its position in defending our sovereignty against Chinese aggression,” Pangilinan said in a statement.
The former senator made it clear that attending and supporting government efforts aligned with his advocacies should not be misconstrued as compromising his principles.
“Showing up to support and appreciate the initiatives of Malacañang that we ourselves support and advocate does not mean we have abandoned our principles,” he emphasized.
Pangilinan’s clarification comes amidst reactions following his attendance at the Palace event, given his history as a vocal member of the opposition. The photo with President Marcos and the First Lady sparked mixed sentiments, with some supporters questioning the implications of his presence.
The concert, attended by prominent figures from the entertainment industry, underscored the government’s support for Philippine cinema as an essential part of cultural heritage and economic growth.
