MANILA- Despite the Supreme Court’s unanimous disbarment ruling on Wednesday, June 28, Malacañang stood by Larry Gadon’s appointment as Presidential Adviser on Poverty Alleviation.

In a statement, Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin said that Gadon’s role will not be affected by his status as a lawyer.

“He will continue on his new role as Presidential Adviser on Poverty Alleviation as there are urgent matters that need to be done in the President’s anti-poverty programs,” Bersamin said.

“The President believes he will do a good job,” he added.

Gadon was unanimously disbarred by the Supreme Court en Banc with a vote of 15-0. This decision was made in response to a viral video clip in which he used offensive language towards journalist Raissa Robles, known for her critical stance on President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

The Supreme Court cited Gadon’s violation of Canon II, which states that “a lawyer shall, at all times, act with propriety and maintain the appearance of propriety in personal and professional dealings, observe honesty, respect, and courtesy, and uphold the dignity of the legal profession consistent with the highest standards of ethical behavior.”

Before the unanimous decision, Gadon had previously been convicted by the Court and suspended from the practice of law for 3 months for using offensive and intemperate language. He was also warned that repeating the same offense would result in a more severe penalty. Currently, there are 6 other administrative cases pending against Gadon before the Office of the Bar Confidant, and 4 cases before the Commission on Bar Discipline of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines.

The SC ruling unequivocally condemns all forms of abuse, particularly when committed by an officer of the court.

“The privilege to practice law is bestowed only upon individuals who are competent intellectually, academically and, equally important, morally. There is no room in this noble profession for misogyny and sexism. The Court will never tolerate abuse, in whatever form, especially when perpetrated by an officer of the court.”

Nonetheless, the former lawyer shrugged off his disbarment and filed a motion for reconsideration, arguing that the penalty imposed was “too harsh.” Furthermore, he downplayed the Supreme Court’s decision by stating that legal expertise is not necessary for his new role as a presidential adviser.

“The position and the task given to me by the President do not require lawyering hence my suspension and disbarment have no effect on my appointment. I will just approach this issue on a personal concern, file a motion for reconsideration and proceed in facing the challenges of the job and aim to serve the public in my best capability,” said Gadon.
