MMDA to install wheelchair lift at EDSA-Philam station
Mike Manalaysay July 20, 2024 at 06:37 PMMANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Saturday announced that it will close the wheelchair ramp at the EDSA-Philam station in Quezon City to facilitate construction of improvements.
This decision comes in response to criticism that the ramp is too steep for wheelchair users.
MMDA acting chairman Atty. Romando Artes explained in a media forum that they will install an inclined wheelchair lift at the elevated ramp.
“Sa amin po kasing observation, wala halos gumagamit ng bus carousel na naka-wheelchair. Buti na lang na-criticize din po kami kaya napag-isipan naman po kung paano ia-address ‘yong issue,” Artes said.
Construction on the ramp improvements, including the installation of a lift, began on Saturday morning. Artes estimates that the entire upgrade will take one to two months to complete.
The MMDA will temporarily close access to the ramp and advises the public to use the stairs in the meantime.
Artes emphasized that the government will not provide additional funding for the improvements, as the contractor has agreed to cover all extra costs.
