MRT3 files petition for fare hike
Paulo Gaborni July 5, 2023 at 03:25 PMTwo weeks after the fare hike for Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line 1 and Line 2 had been approved, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) is set to resubmit a petition for fare adjustments for the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3), citing the need to obtain more funds to ensure the efficiency of the train services.
The petition calls for an increase of P2.29 in boarding fee and 21 centavos per kilometer.
The last fare hike for MRT-3 was approved eight years ago.
A few weeks prior, the DOTr had stated that the fare increases for Line 1 of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) (Baclaran to Monumento) and Line 2 (Antipolo City to Manila) had already been approved and would go into effect the following month.
Earlier, Jorjette Aquino, Assistant Secretary for Railways at the Department of Transportation, gave the public the assurance that the government would continue to subsidize 70 percent of passengers’ end-to-end fares even if the petition has been approved.
