More than one million passengers traveled through the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in the past Holy Week from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, according to the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) which manages the Philippines’ main international gateway.

The MIAA reported that it logged 1,040,707 passengers at NAIA in this year’s Holy Week, which reflected a 12 percent increase compared to the 926,755 passengers that the gateway had during the same holiday period in 2023.

Of the total, 511,073 passengers arrived at the NAIA, while 529,634 were departing passengers, it said, adding that domestic passenger volume reached 521,154, while international passengers totaled 519,553.

As compared to last year’s Holy Week, domestic and international passenger volume increased by 10 percent and 14 percent, respectively, it commented.

The airport authority noted that in terms of daily average volume, NAIA saw the highest number of passengers – 139, 894 – on Easter Sunday, while the lowest passenger volume, international and domestic combined, was logged at 124,230 on Good Friday.

The MIAA further clarified on the power fluctuations that hit NAIA Terminal 2 last March 27, Holy Wednesday, which lasted for over three hours and affected the all-domestic terminal’s air conditioning units.

It stressed, “Following an evaluation by the terminal engineering team, it was determined that the terminal circuit breaker kept tripping due to high power loads caused by the elevated heat index outside the terminal.”
