QUEZON CITY — The Department of Agriculture–Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) released a Bataan Oil Spill Bulletin on Monday, announcing that no fishing ban has been issued for the adjacent waters still unaffected by the oil spill.
The bureau assures fisheries stakeholders and the general public that it is actively working with partner government authorities to mitigate any potential impact on marine life and public health following the capsizing of the tanker ship Terra Nova in Bataan on July 25, 2024.
The bulletin states that the agency is closely monitoring catch landings to ensure that unloaded catch has no traces of oil. It is also conducting sensory analysis of fish samples from surrounding waters.
On Monday, July 29, fish samples from Bataan (Limay, Orion, Balanga City, and Samal) were tested for taste (cooked fish), raw odor, and cooked odor. All samples passed the sensory analysis.
DA-BFAR urges fisherfolk and the general public to remain calm and monitor the situation through updates issued by government authorities, including DA-BFAR.
Further tests will be conducted with third-party laboratories to check for the presence of oil and grease, and harmful contaminants called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).
The bulletin also states that DA-BFAR is committed to protecting the marine environment and supporting fishing communities. Fisherfolk are urged to promptly report any oil slick sightings, avoid contaminated areas, use personal protective equipment when necessary, immediately harvest shellfish or fish in the surrounding area, and prevent further contamination by maintaining proper waste disposal and regular boat maintenance.
