MANILA — The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFOMS) has strongly condemned the killing of veteran journalist Juan “Johnny” Dayang, a respected figure in the Philippine media industry.
Dayang, 89, was shot by an unidentified gunman inside his residence in Kalibo, Aklan, at approximately 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29. He was rushed to the Dr. Rafael S. Tumbokon Memorial Hospital for medical treatment but was declared dead on arrival.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) is actively investigating the case to identify and apprehend those responsible for the fatal attack, as well as to establish the motive behind the killing.
Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) recovered three spent bullet casings of undetermined caliber at the location of the shooting.
“We are closely coordinating with all concerned agencies to ensure the immediate resolution of this case,” said Undersecretary Jose Torres Jr., executive director of PTFOMS.
“We stand in solidarity with the media community as we mourn the passing of Mr. Dayang, a figure regarded as a pillar of Philippine journalism whose contributions greatly enriched our democratic discourse,” Torres said.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Dayang during this difficult time,” he added. “His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of journalists in their pursuit of truth and justice.”
Johnny Dayang served as the president emeritus of the Publishers Association of the Philippines (PAPI).
The PTFOMS also called on the public to remain vigilant and to support efforts that uphold press freedom and protect media professionals in the Philippines.
