QUEZON CITY — CIBAC Party-List Rep. Eddie Villanueva has filed House Resolution 2114, calling for an inquiry into the implementation of Republic Act No. 10589, or the Anti-Corruption Month law. The resolution seeks to evaluate whether government agencies, government-owned and controlled corporations (GOCCs), local government units (LGUs), and private sector employers are adhering to the law’s provisions.
The law, championed by CIBAC Party-List during the 15th Congress, designates December as Anti-Corruption Month and mandates government and private entities to conduct activities raising awareness of corruption’s adverse effects.
Rep. Villanueva emphasized the importance of assessing the law’s compliance and the effectiveness of the initiatives carried out. He noted the need to identify gaps and recommend measures to bolster the anti-corruption campaign.
The CIBAC solon further highlighted that activities during Anti-Corruption Month must not merely be symbolic but must lead to a shift in attitudes and behavior.
Villanueva underscored the responsibility of public servants to set an example and ensure transparency and accountability remain priorities in governance.
“As public servants, we must lead by example and ensure that the fight against corruption remains at the forefront of our governance. This inquiry will help us identify what more needs to be done to uphold transparency and accountability,” he said.
The legislator also pointed to the country’s consistently low scores in global anti-corruption metrics, such as the Corruption Perception Index by Transparency International, as evidence of the urgent need for action.
Villanueva urged his colleagues in Congress to expedite the inquiry, particularly in light of the recent International Anti-Corruption Day celebration on December 9, 2024.
