CAVITE — Traces of oil were discovered on the coast of Tanza in Cavite, which a fishing community believes came from the sinking oil tanker MT Terra Nova.
On Monday, the fisherfolk group “Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas” (PAMALAKAYA) released videos and images of oil traces along the Tanza beach.
Fisherfolk Worried About Oil Spill Contaminating Fish in Manila Bay
Fisherfolk and coastal residents in Tanza, Cavite were disrupted by the unmistakable odor associated with the spill.

They are also concerned that the oil slick will pollute fishing resources, influencing farm gate prices for their produce.
“Nangyari na ang aming kinatatakutan; ang kumalat ang langis sa kalakhan ng Manila Bay at maperwisyo ang kabuhayan ng maraming mangingisda,” said PAMALAKAYA in a statement.
“Dito lamang sa bayan ng Tanza, tinatayang mahigit 5,000 mangingisda ang maaapektuhan kung hindi agarang maaapula ang kumakalat na langis,” the statement added.

Other groups like Greenpeace also expressed concern as aerial footage showed the extensive spread of the oil spill from the sunken tanker in Bulacan.
According to the group, the oil spill reached the waters of Hagonoy, Bulacan and was confirmed by barangay officials of Isla Tibaguin when they saw oil slicks during a fishing trip.
On Thursday, July 25, the oil tanker MT Terra Nova sank off the coast of Bataan province.
The owner of the sunken ship, Shogun Ships Company Incorporated, has called in Harbor Star Shipping Services to help with the tanker’s salvage and oil spill response.
