MASBATE — An underwater drone, suspected to be of Chinese origin, was recovered by three fishermen in the waters off San Pascual, Masbate, in the central Philippines, police reported on Thursday. The discovery has sparked concerns about potential national security implications amid ongoing maritime tensions between the Philippines and China.

The drone, marked “HY-119,” was found floating approximately nine kilometers (six miles) from the San Pascual coastline on Monday. Fisherman Rodnie Valenzuela, 30, reported the find and handed over the two-meter-long, torpedo-shaped device to local authorities with the assistance of barangay officials. It was later turned over to the Philippine Navy on Tuesday for further inspection.

Drone Specifications and Potential Use

Regional police director Andre Dizon described the device as having fins, an antenna, and a viewing apparatus, suggesting it could serve navigation, communication, monitoring, or reconnaissance purposes. Based on open-source internet research, the “HY-119” model is reportedly linked to a Chinese underwater navigation and communication system. Although unarmed, the police emphasized its significance due to its potential use in surveillance operations.

The recovery of the drone comes amidst longstanding disputes between the Philippines and China over maritime rights in the South China Sea. Beijing asserts claims over nearly the entire sea, often clashing with rival claims, including those of the Philippines. These disputes persist despite a 2016 international ruling rejecting China’s territorial claims as having no legal basis.

The Philippine Navy and the Chinese Embassy in Manila have yet to comment on the incident. The drone’s recovery has drawn attention to growing tensions in the region, particularly concerning the surveillance activities and territorial interests of major powers.
