MANILA, Philippines — The House Committee on Justice has ruled that the impeachment complaints filed against Vice President Sara Duterte are “sufficient in grounds,” allowing the process to move forward to the next stage.
The panel’s decision means the complaints have passed one of the key constitutional requirements in impeachment proceedings, which assess whether allegations are strong enough to warrant further hearings.
Following the ruling, lawmakers are set to proceed to the “hearing proper,” where evidence and testimonies will be examined more closely. The hearings are scheduled to begin on March 25, according to congressional officials.
The complaints against Duterte include serious allegations such as the misuse of confidential funds and other issues raised in earlier filings.
This development comes after previous impeachment efforts were halted due to legal and constitutional issues, including the one-year bar rule imposed by the Supreme Court.
With the complaints now deemed sufficient in grounds, the impeachment process formally advances, potentially bringing the Vice President closer to a full trial depending on the outcome of subsequent proceedings.
