CITY OF MALOLOS — Major dredging and desilting operations on major rivers and offshore channels in Bulacan will commence by next month.

This was announced by Bulacan Gov. Daniel Fernando during the briefing on the implementation of the province-wide flood control and river restoration project at the EDSA Shangri-La Hotel on Monday (April 29).

The governor said that the provincial government of Bulacan tapped the services of TCSC Corp. at no cost to the government to address the decades-old problems on the annual floodings being experienced by the province.

The governor also pointed out that the project will increase the income of the province through revenue sharing by commercial disposition of the dredged materials from the rivers to support big reclamation projects.

In order to restore the heavily silted rivers of the province particularly the Angat River, Pamarawan River, Malolos River, Hagonoy River, and Guiguinto River, massive dredging is needed to open a navigational channel in the offshore delta, Fernando noted.

In a powerpoint presentation, TCSC Corp. officials said that based on their four years (September 2020 – January 2024) of subsurface soil investigation, geological exploration and geotechnical investigations showed that the major rivers and offshore channels of Bulacan are already very shallow that reduce it’s water-holding capacity causing floods in low-lying areas in the province.

Scientific investigations and studies showed that approximately 282,026,940 cubic meters of silt, fine sand,clay and other sediments can be extracted in the said  desilting operations.

They added that these materials can be sold in the landfilling for the new Bulacan International Airport or the megadike project and even the expansion of the wetland ecosystem in the coastal areas of Bulacan.
