ANGELES CITY — A seven-year-old girl drowned while her five-year-old companion was rescued after they slipped into the Abacan River System in this city on Saturday afternoon.
A belated report on Sunday afternoon, reaching Col. Amado Mendoza, Angeles City police director, identified the fatality as alias Cristel and the rescued child as alias Prince, both residents of Jaoville Pandan in the city.
An initial report to Mendoza indicated that the two children were salvaging floating recyclable debris in the Abacan River System in Jaoville Riverside, Barangay Pandan, between 3:00-4:00 p.m. on Saturday when they slipped into the deeper portion of the waterway.
Elmer Cunanan, a construction worker, learned of the incident and rushed to the scene to retrieve the two children, who were eventually brought to the Rafael Lazatin Memorial Hospital for medical treatment.
However, medical personnel were unable to revive alias Cristel, and only alias Prince survived the ordeal.
