TANAY, Rizal — A well-known moto vlogger lost his life in a tragic accident on Sunday, January 26, while performing a dangerous stunt along Marilaque Road, particularly at the notorious “Devil’s Curve” in Barangay Cuyambay, Tanay, Rizal.

The victim, John Louie Arguelles, a resident of Antipolo, Rizal, was a prominent figure in the local riding community and was nicknamed “Superman,” “Master,” and “Motopush” for his daring stunts.

According to video footage of the incident, Arguelles and fellow rider Rico Buyawan were speeding and attempting the “Superman” motorbike stunt, where riders lie flat on the seat of a moving motorcycle. Buyawan lost control of his bike, sideswiping Arguelles. The collision sent both riders crashing into a concrete barrier where onlookers were gathered. The 26-year-old Buyawan and six other individuals watching by the roadside sustained injuries.

The impact caused severe damage to parked motorcycles, some of which tumbled off the cliff.

Authorities confirmed that the incident was the 13th road accident in January alone. The accident highlights the dangers of the Marilaque Highway (Manila-Rizal-Laguna-Quezon Highway), originally known as Marcos Highway or Manila-Infanta Road, which stretches through Manila, Rizal, Laguna, and Quezon provinces.

The highway has earned a reputation as one of the deadliest roads in the Philippines due to frequent accidents, often involving thrill-seeking riders performing risky stunts for photographs and social media content.

Despite repeated warnings and reports of fatalities—some claiming lives are lost weekly—the Marilaque Highway remains a hub for reckless stunts and street racing. Calls for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and preventive measures continue to grow as the highway remains a hotspot for accidents.

Authorities are urging riders to prioritize safety and avoid life-threatening stunts, while local officials face mounting pressure to implement consistent measures to prevent further tragedies.
