CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga — Central Luzon now has 16 election areas of concern.
This was confirmed by Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo, Central Luzon police director, during the activation of the Regional Election Monitoring and Action Center (REMAC) and the Media Action Center at this police camp on Thursday (May 7).
The areas of concern are categorized as follows: green for peaceful areas with no cause for concern; yellow if there is intense political rivalry; orange if there is the presence of armed groups; and red if the area is deemed critical.
Atty. Elmo Duque, Commission on Elections (Comelec) assistant regional director for Central Luzon, told ARKIPELAGO NEWS during the launch of REMAC that the election areas of concern in the towns of Sto. Tomas in Pampanga and San Rafael in Bulacan were raised from green to yellow category. Meanwhile, the town of San Antonio in Nueva Ecija was downgraded from orange to yellow category.

Duque added that the province of Aurora has two areas—Baler and Maria Aurora—under the yellow category, along with Mariveles in Bataan; San Miguel and San Rafael in Bulacan; and the following areas in Nueva Ecija: Aliaga, Cabanatuan City, Cabiao, Gapan City, Jaen, Lupao, San Antonio, and San Leonardo. Pampanga towns under the yellow category include Arayat, San Antonio, and San Fernando City.
The REMAC is equipped with advanced information technology and communication equipment connected to all major internet providers. A large LED screen has been installed to provide real-time monitoring of election activities through CCTV footage from across the region.

A national 911 simulation exercise was also conducted at the REMAC to assess emergency response for election-related incidents in the region.
“The live exercise showed an average of three-minute response time; however, this is subject to road traffic and area familiarity of responding units,” Fajardo added.
