Kwitis, Five Star cause most of Bulacan’s FWRIs

CITY OF MALOLOS – The primary cause of fireworks-related injuries (FWRIs) in Bulacan is kwitis, followed by Five Star.
The Bulacan Provincial Health Office-Public Health reported that kwitis caused 41 FWRIs, followed by Five Star with 35. Other fireworks-related injuries were caused by unknown fireworks (24), luces (14), and fountains (10).
Fireworks products causing fewer than 10 injuries included boga, pla-pla, piccolo, Judas belt, whistle devices, kwiton, sparklers, roman candles, giant whistle bombs, bawang, pillbox, kabasi, and baby rockets.
The report stated that a total of 164 FWRIs were recorded in Bulacan, gathered from government and private hospitals, as well as rural health units, between December 21, 2024, and January 2, 2025. This marked an increase of two cases compared to last year’s 162 incidents.
The report highlighted that the town of Santa Maria registered the highest number of FWRIs with 23 cases, followed by the City of San Jose del Monte with 21, Bocaue with 17, and Baliuag with 11. The towns of Calumpit, Marilao, and San Rafael each reported 10 cases, while the City of Malolos had nine and the City of Meycauayan reported seven. Balagtas and Hagonoy each recorded six cases, while Guiguinto, Plaridel, and San Ildefonso each had five. San Miguel, Pandi, and Norzagaray reported four cases each, Bulakan, Bustos, and Pulilan had two each, and Angat had one.
No FWRIs were reported in the towns of Doña Remedios Trinidad, Obando, and Paombong.
Among the FWRIs, 131 were blast or burn injuries without amputations, 19 were eye injuries, six were blast injuries with amputations, five involved multiple injuries, and three were classified as other types of injuries.
