ZAMBOANGA CITY — Two armed men were fatally shot by a police officer during a New Year’s Eve gunfight that was captured on CCTV.
Police Sergeant Ryan Mariano, an intelligence operative, successfully prevented an attack by two motorcycle-riding assailants in Barangay Ayala, Zamboanga City, on December 31.
CCTV footage revealed that Mariano was positioned near a church when the gunmen attempted to kill him. Mariano wrestled with one of the attackers, pulled out his service weapon, and engaged in a gunfight. One of the assailants was killed on the spot.
The police officer carefully moved behind a parked vehicle while the second attacker sought cover. Mariano fired and hit the fleeing assailant. He was taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The suspect was identified as Haber Tating by Zamboanga Peninsula police director Brigadier General Bowenn Joey Masauding. Tating had an outstanding warrant for two counts of murder. His companion remains unidentified.
Mariano sustained injuries to his stomach and is currently undergoing medical treatment.
