Filipina tennis star Alexandra Eala delivered one of the biggest wins of her young career, taking down World No. 8 Jasmine Paolini in the Round of 32 of the WTA 1000 Dubai Tennis Championships to book a spot in the Round of 16.
Eala came out firing, dominating the opening set, 6-1, and putting the Italian veteran on the back foot early.
The second set, however, turned into a rollercoaster.
After building a 5-3 lead, the 20-year-old Filipina suddenly found herself trailing 5-6 in a tense shift of momentum. But with a sea of Filipino fans energizing the center court, Eala dug deep and forced a tiebreak in front of a roaring crowd.
In the decisive tiebreak, Eala showed poise beyond her years. She saved two set points with fearless baseline winners and held her nerve to shut the door on the 30-year-old Paolini, sealing the thrilling victory in one hour and 40 minutes.
“All the emotions are coming, the tension is so high, especially in the second set,” Eala said after the match. “In the tiebreak, I was trying everything to keep myself in check and adjust to the changing events.”
With the statement win, Eala advances to a highly anticipated rematch against World No. 32 Sorana Cîrstea of Romania. Cîrstea secured her own Round of 16 berth after defeating No. 14 Linda Nosková, 6-1, 6-4.
