Kahit mula siya sa isa sa mga pinaka-influential political families sa bansa, Denise Laurel made it clear na wala siyang balak pumasok sa politika.
Sa recent interview niya with Karen Davila, the singer-actress shared that while she’s proud of her heritage, she wants to prove that she’s no “nepo baby.” The term refers to children of powerful or famous personalities who find success because of family connections.
“I don’t dabble in politics at all. You won’t hear anything from me. I just feel that artistas who didn’t go to school or didn’t educate themselves on the government and laws should not be running. How are they going to help the country if they don’t know even just the basis of groundwork?” she said.
Dagdag pa niya, mahalaga ang pagmamahal na tumulong sa kapwa, pero dapat unahin muna ang edukasyon.
“The love to help the people will always be there. But if you really, truly love your country and do something good for it, educate yourself first,” she added.
Her statement may surprise some, knowing she’s the great-granddaughter of former President Jose P. Laurel, granddaughter of Vice President Salvador “Doy” Laurel and philanthropist-artist Celia Diaz-Laurel, and also related to former House Speaker Jose Bayani “Pepito” Hidalgo Laurel Jr., among other public officials.
