Sa panayam ng aktres na si Toni Gonzaga, sinabi ni Pangulong Bongbong Marcos na dapat daw buksan at pag-usapan ang kaso ng hindi nila pagbabayad ng estate tax na umabot na sa P203 billion. Hindi raw nabigyan ng pagkakataon ang kanyang pamilya na maibigay ang kanilang panig tungkol sa kasong ito.

“Because when this case came out, we were all in the United States. So when it was the time for us to answer, we had no chance to answer… Now, we are all here. Open the case, and let us argue it,” ayon kay Marcos.

Pero kinontra ang pahayag na ito ni dating Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio. Ayon kay Carpio, nabigyan ng sapat na abiso at pagkakataon ang pamilya Marcos.

“The BIR notices of tax assessment were issued to and received by Imelda Marcos after the Marcoses returned to the Phil from exile. The Marcoses deliberately ignored the BIR notices until the Leyte properties of the Marcos estate were auctioned off by the BIR. BBM then questioned the validity of the assessment before the CA and finally before the SC where Imelda also intervened and filed a second MR,” paliwanag ni Carpio.

Noong 1997, naging final at executory na ang desisyon ng Korte Suprema sa kasong ito, at pinagbabayad ang pamilya Marcos ng P23 billion. Dahil sa mga penalty at surcharge, lumobo ito sa halagang P203 billion.
