Oxfam Pilipinas, in collaboration with the People’s Disaster Risk Reduction Network and United Youth of the Philippines-Women (UnYPhil-Women), has initiated emergency relief operations in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) following severe flooding caused by torrential rains since May 14. The flooding has displaced over 192,000 residents, particularly affecting areas within the BARMM Special Geographic Area where floodwaters remain high.

As part of the European Union-funded ACCESS project, the consortium distributed hygiene and water kits to 214 households in Barangays Lagundi and Balong in Tugunan, and provided essential household items to 150 families who lost their belongings in the floods. The ACCESS project, supported by EU Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid, aims to assist the most vulnerable communities and schools affected by complex emergencies.

The flooding has aggravated the existing problems in the region, including food insecurity, poor sanitation, and heightened risks of disease outbreaks. Many affected residents are staying in overcrowded evacuation centers with limited access to clean water and sanitation facilities, raising concerns about potential health crises. The ACCESS consortium has identified urgent needs for food, shelter, hygiene support, and mental health services, particularly for women and children.

Humanitarian teams continue to monitor conditions in adjacent barangays and coordinate with local authorities to deliver aid and assess further needs.
