CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga — The Department of Health (DOH)–Central Luzon Center for Health Development (CLCHD) is reminding the public that the country is observing Rabies Awareness Month this March, in line with Republic Act 9482.
Rabies, though preventable, continues to claim 200–300 lives annually.
The DOH–CLCHD confirmed to ARKIPELAGO NEWS that anti-rabies vaccinations are free at DOH-recognized animal bite treatment centers, provided the vaccines are sourced from the Central Luzon Center for Health Development.
It added that vaccination is also free for PhilHealth members if the wound is classified under Category 3 and the facility is PhilHealth-accredited.
The DOH–CLCHD is advising animal lovers to be responsible pet owners: have their pets vaccinated, and if bitten, seek immediate medical treatment and mandatory vaccination.
The public is likewise urged to avoid stray dogs and cats that may be carriers of the disease, and to ensure that their pets receive regular anti-rabies vaccinations.
Suspected rabid animals should be reported to barangay or local health offices.
For those bitten or scratched by pet animals, it is advised to first wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water, then proceed to the nearest animal bite treatment center where the injury will be assessed for rabies exposure.
Patients will be vaccinated and are expected to complete the prescribed vaccination schedule.
