Filipina tennis star Alexandra Eala advanced to the Round of 16 of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells after world No. 4 Coco Gauff retired due to a left arm injury on Monday, March 9, 2026.
Eala was in control early in the match, dominating the opening set with sharp corner shots and aggressive baseline play.
The Filipina phenom surged to a 5–2 lead before closing out the first set, 6–2.
During a changeover while trailing in the opening set, Gauff received medical attention after feeling discomfort in her left arm.
Eala maintained her momentum early in the second set, building a 2–0 lead. However, Gauff eventually decided to retire from the match after experiencing renewed pain in her shoulder, which she described as feeling “on fire.”
With the win, Eala moves on to the Round of 16 of the prestigious WTA tournament, marking another milestone in her young career.
Despite the circumstances of the victory, Eala expressed gratitude for the opportunity to compete on one of tennis’ biggest stages.
“I really didn’t want to win this way, but this is still a big moment for me. To be able to play on Stadium 1 of Indian Wells against a great competitor. I’m really grateful to be here and I’m super happy,” Eala said.
The match also served as a rematch between Eala and Gauff after their previous meeting at the Dubai Tennis Championships earlier this season.
