CALOOCAN CITY — Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio Cardinal David, the 10th cardinal from the Philippines, marked his return to the country by celebrating a thanksgiving Mass at San Roque Cathedral on the morning of Saturday, December 14.
More than 1,800 people gathered at San Roque Cathedral to witness Fr. Ambo’s first Mass as a cardinal.
The celebration came shortly after his weeklong trip to Rome, where Cardinal David attended a December 7 consistory at Saint Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. During the ceremony, Pope Francis elevated him to the rank of cardinal, alongside 20 other prelates from around the world.
“In this world, there are too many walls. I think we should demolish the walls that divide us and build more bridges of goodwill among ourselves,” Cardinal David said in his homily, calling for unity and solidarity among people.
Cardinal David’s appointment is historic in many ways, as he becomes the first to achieve significant milestones in his ministry. Yet, despite his new title and responsibilities, he emphasized his enduring commitment to his local Diocese of Kalookan, which includes the neighboring cities of Navotas and Malabon.
Known affectionately as “Bishop Ambo,” Cardinal David’s work in the Diocese of Kalookan has been marked by his advocacy for the poor and marginalized, his outspoken call for social justice, and his strong pastoral leadership. His elevation to the College of Cardinals reflects not only his individual contributions but also the growing recognition of the Philippine Church’s role in the global Catholic community.
As he begins this new phase of service, Cardinal David’s message remains clear: to break barriers, promote goodwill, and remain steadfast in shepherding his flock.
